Printing Charts for Dimmed Boardrooms
Paper stock, contrast ratios, and font sizes that keep anomaly annotations readable when the projector fails or the room lights drop.
Directors review risk in rooms where someone always dims the lights for the projector. Screen-only chart delivery fails in that setting—colors wash out, axis labels shrink, and the committee falls back to asking the analyst to read numbers aloud.
We print every flagship folio on 200gsm matte stock with a brass-gold and charcoal palette tested at 40 lux ambient light. Three production choices matter:
Font size on axis labels. Minimum 9pt IBM Plex Mono at A3 size. Smaller labels disappear when photographed on phones for later reference—a habit we observe in nearly every committee meeting.
Contrast ratio on flagged clusters. Gold (#c9a227) on charcoal (#1a1814) maintains 7.2:1 contrast. Green outlier markers use oxidized green (#5a7a5e) at 4.8:1—above the 4.5:1 minimum for secondary annotations.
Binding and page order. Wire-o binding allows the chair to lay the folio flat while referencing earlier charts. We order pages by severity: highest-priority flagged clusters first, explained outliers in an appendix.
For executive briefings, A2 boards on brass easels eliminate the projector dependency entirely. Participants walk around the table and point at specific bars—a interaction pattern that screen sharing cannot replicate.
